Welcome to the Ricochet Baseball Tour 2001 Page. Every summer I take my kids on a crazy baseball trip, and this year all seven cities just happened to be Ricochet Ready. Coincidence? You be the judge. I hope you enjoy following us around the country.

June 16th & 28th - San Diego
I'm a Padre fan (we do exist), so the Ricochet Baseball Tour 2001 made its way through San Diego twice! The network worked flawlessly in all areas tested (even near the San Ysidro border crossing by Tijuana). During the first game there was a Ricochet advertisement on the stadium scoreboard, and during the second game there was an on field demo of Ricochet and a Rico camera!
Ricochet Speeds at Qualcomm Stadium:
Merlin in laptop (parking lot) - >250kbps GS modem in laptop (parking lot) - 160-170kbps Merlin in laptop in stadium - 163.2kbps (This appears to be my Merlin max).

June 17th - Anaheim
Anaheim is one of the cities that has yet to allow Metricom to hang poletop radios. But I'm pleased to report that despite the lack of poletops in Anaheim, the network worked flawlessly. ** Perhaps the network is optimized in the surrounding cities, or maybe I was near a WAP.
Ricochet Speeds at Edison Field:
Merlin in laptop (parking lot) - >200kbps GS modem in laptop (parking lot) - 130-160kbps Merlin in iPAQ in stadium - >100kbps

June 22nd & 23rd - Oakland
My 10 year old son was able to get a digital autograph from Doug Davis (Texas Pitcher..See Ricochet Photo Page 4) on the iPAQ. His exact words when my son handed him the iPAQ were "What the heck is that...oh it's a Ricochet." Since all Major League Players travel through numerous Ricochet cities each month, it's likely that many of them are already Ricochet fans. As usual, the Ricochet network was excellent at Network Associates Coliseum.
Ricochet Speeds at Network Associates Coliseum:
Merlin in laptop (parking lot) - >220kbps GS modem in laptop (parking lot) - 140kbps Merlin in iPAQ in stadium - 163.2kbps (Merlin max)

June 24th - Los Angeles
This was my second adventure to Dodger Stadium with Ricochet. Once again I found that the coverage was excellent in the parking lot, but a little weak inside the stadium. Still great for keeping up on the other games in progress, and for booking the hotel reservations for that night.
Ricochet Speeds at Dodger Stadium:
Merlin in laptop (parking lot) - 190kbps GS modem in laptop (parking lot) - 135kbps Merlin/ipaq in the stadium - 60kbps

June 25th & 26th - Denver
My Denver Ricochet experiences were excellent. The downtown area, including Coors Field have perfect coverage. I was pleased to find that the Coors Brewery was well covered all the way out in Golden. One major problem was that our hotel at exit 197 (Arapahoe St, South of Denver) did not have coverage!
Ricochet Speeds at Coors Field:
Merlin in Laptop (parking lot) - 270kbps GS modem in laptop (parking lot) - 172.6kbps Merlin in iPAQ - 163.2kbps (Merlin max)

June 27th - Phoenix
My first impression of the Phoenix Ricochet network is a good one! The downtown area around the stadium is blanketed with poletops, my signal was strong, and speeds were excellent. My GS modem normally maxes out at 170kbps in the Bay Area, but in the Denver and Phoenix GSA's I was able to routinely exceed 170kbps.
Ricochet Speeds at Bank One Ballpark "The BOB":
Merlin in laptop (parking lot) - >260kbps GS modem in laptop (parking lot) - 160-170+kbps Merlin in iPAQ in stadium (roof open) - 150kbps Merlin in iPAQ in stadium (roof closed) - 140kbps

June 29th - San Francisco
Our final stop on the tour was San Francisco's beautiful Pacific Bell Park. The Ricochet coverage is awesome, the stadium is beautiful, and on this night we had Barry Bonds vs. Mark McGwire! It doesn't get any better than that if you're a baseball fan.
No speed tests were necessary at Pac Bell Park. As you all know, the San Francisco network kicks ass.
** Too bad nobody knows about it yet!
